Mayor-elect Rob Ford named his executive committee on Monday afternoon.

  November 29, 2010 – 3:53 pm

In his first press conference since winning the election, mayor-elect Rob Ford unveiled his “first class team”, which includes stalwart of fiscal conservatives, two council newbies and virtually no representation for downtown Toronto.

“This is not about left or right, this is about bringing respect to taxpayers back to City Hall. This team that I have demonstrated today will do that. They’re hard working, they understand customer service and that’s the bottom line,” the mayor-elect told reporters Monday.

He named Doug Holyday, someone for whom he has “the utmost respect”, as his deputy mayor. And he went on to confirm a list that was the worst kept secret at City Hall: Scarborough Councillor Paul Ainslie will chair the government management committee; Scarborough Councillor Norm Kelly will chair parks and environment; North York Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti will chair the community development committee; Etobicoke Councillor Peter Milczyn will chair the planning and growth committee; Don Valley East Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong will chair the public works and infrastructure committee; Scarborough Councillor Michael Thompson will head up economic development; and Davenport’s Cesar Palacio, whose ward was half in the old City of Toronto, will chair licensing and standards. All seven will be part of the mayor’s cabinet-like executive committee. The Mayor-elect also announced four additional members of the executive committee: Scarborough Councillor Mike Del Grande, who will be budget chief; Willowdale Councillor David Shiner, budget chief during the Lastman years; and councillor rookies Jaye Robinson, who represents Don Valley West, and Michelle Berardinetti, Scarborough Southwest. The latter two will “bring a fresh insight to the challenges facing our city,” said Mr. Ford.

Mayor-elect Ford also expressed his full support in naming Councillor Frances Nunziata as Speaker and midtown Councillor Karen Stintz to chair the Toronto Transit Commission.

Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong, chair of the public works and infrastructure committee, was optimistic about the next four years.

“We’re going to get to work to get the city’s finances in order, trying to reduce the size of the government, reduce the cost of the government, bring better customer service, those are all I think themes we’ll see in the coming months,” he said.

Asked how quickly he was going to move to implement his mandate, which includes cancelling the vehicle registration tax, mayor-elect Ford said, “We’re working as quick as we can.”

“That’s what people have asked for and that’s what we’re doing.” He officially takes office on Wednesday.

Doug Ford, the mayor-elect’s brother and the man who was elected to replace his brother on council, promised action on cancelling the vehicle registration tax “immediately.” He said the mayor-elect has the votes to eliminate the despised $60 fee.

Doug Ford was not given an official role, but it’s clear that he will play a prominent role in the next administration.

“You can call me that, an advisor,” he said. “My expertise is in business, and looking at numbers and that’s what I’m going to focus on. But again it goes back to being accountable to the taxpayers and customer service,” said Doug Ford. “I’m just going to work closely with the councillors and with Rob, and help them any way I can. If Rob wants the grass cut outside, I’ll cut the grass. If he wants me to help out any other way, I will.”
