No reward for McDonald’s customer who pointed out $1M mistake

Everyone knows you need Park Place and Boardwalk to win it big in Monopoly.

Ryan Doon spent about an hour Wednesday evening believing that McDonald’s  had made him an instant millionaire — but then something in the back of his mind seemed to say, “Not so fast.”

Now he has spent the past few sleepless days wondering why the company will not even offer him a free meal.

“They didn’t even offer me a Big Mac,” he said Friday morning.

Mr. Doon went to a McDonald’s on Wednesday night and ordered the “value meal.” On the package of french fries was a sticker, part of the restaurant chain’s new Monopoly game promotion. The sticker said “Park Place” and on the back he saw “$1,000,000” and the name of the company’s Canadian web site.

Sure enough, the web site told him that Park Place was worth $1-million but then he thought maybe this was a joke.

“I thought maybe it was some kind spam site and wanted to make sure it was for real,” said Mr. Doon, an engineer for IBM Canada.

He went to the U.S. web site and immediately spotted the difference. Mr. Doon soon found out what most fans of the board game know all too well: too cash in big you need both “Park Place” and “Boardwalk.”

Given it was now the middle of the night there was nothing he could do but wait to find out if the Canadian site had published an error.

“I actually haven’t slept since Wednesday night,” said Mr. Doon, who sounded as if he was loaded up on caffeine.

He said he called McDonald’s in the morning, spoke to a “customer representative.” Later in the day, he said, he got a call thanking him for pointing out the error. But no cash or free meal.

“I was thinking for a while that maybe I was a millionaire. I was hoping the company might have offered something more.”
Mr. Doon said the money would have made a nice nest egg but would have continued working.

McDonald’s Canada said in a statement said the error was fixed as soon as it was brought to attention. It does not mention Mr. Doon by name.

“We thank the customer for reaching out to us and sincerely regret this error occurred,” the statement said.
