A Toronto-area woman, who pulled over a man she accused of speeding and demanded he pay a fine on the spot, was arrested Friday.
Halton Regional Police said the woman screamed at the man to pull over early in the morning of Sept. 12 near Bronte Road and Lakeshore Road in Oakville, Ont., where she identified herself as a police officer and requested that he pay a fine.
The 59-year-old man, who was on his way to work at the time, said was not able to pay the fine, but agreed to accompany the woman and a man to a nearby bank machine where he paid the woman an undisclosed amount.
Although she was not dressed in an officer’s uniform, police said her demeanour and questions led the victim to believe she was a police officer.
Police said video captured at the bank machine helped them to identify the woman.
Police believe it was an isolated incident.
A 48-year-old Oakville woman is charged with impersonating a peace officer and extortion. She is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 16.
