EU confident seal ban will stand

In Canada on August 20, 2010 at 09:56

The European Commission expressed confidence Friday that its ban on seal product imports will withstand legal challenges from Canada.

The ban is currently being challenged by the Canadian government at the World Trade Organization and Canada’s Inuit community before the European Union’s General Court in Luxembourg.

“The commission believes (the ban) ensures respect for all our international obligations, while at the same time responding to the concerns expressed by EU citizens,” stated a news release.

“It also ensures that the fundamental economic and social interests of Inuit communities engaged in the hunting of seals as a means to ensure their subsistence are not adversely affected.”
