Ashley Anne Kirilow, a 23-year-old Burlington native, admits she faked cancer, ran a bogus charity and collected thousands of dollars from hundreds of people.

After almost two weeks behind bars, Ashley Kirilow will have a chance to be released from jail on Friday.

Kirilow, 23, earned international notoriety when she admitted to faking cancer to collect money for herself.

The Burlington woman appeared by video-link from the Vanier Centre for Women in a brief court appearance Thursday morning in Milton, where her lawyer requested her bail hearing be held Friday morning.

Outside court, Kirilow’s lawyer said he hoped his client would be released, but he did not speculate on what would be the cost or conditions of bail.

“Once the full matter is explored and the facts come out, there is, as there always is, more to the story then first appears,” Brendan Neil said.

Saying that the case “has taken on a life of its own,” Neil said there is some concern for Kirilow’s safety if she is released, but he hopes the two weeks that have elapsed since the allegations against Kirilow went public people have had a chance to cool off.

“That’s not to say that people aren’t legitimately affected by the allegations.”

Kirilow faces three charges of fraud under $5,000 and one of fraud over $5,000.
