In Canada on August 17, 2010 at 21:25

MONTREAL – A man, who had barricaded himself in an apartment in Snowdon, has been taken out of his apartment in a stretcher and placed in the back of a police car.

The man had been locked in his apartment at the corner of Queen Mary Rd. and Macdonald Ave. with his female roommate since 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The woman was also safely removed from the apartment and has been taken in for questioning.

“Everyone is safe, no one was injured,” said Montreal Police Constable Jacques Chales.

The woman was very cooperative with police throughout the incident and encouraged the man to give himself up to authorities, said Montreal Police Constable Yannick Paradis. Contrary to earlier reports from police and witnesses, the woman is not pregnant.

The SWAT team arrived at the apartment at around 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. Firefighters followed as he threatened to start a fire in the building.

He came out of the apartment without resistance at around 4 p.m. He will spend the night in a detention centre and is expected to appear in court tomorrow where it’s likely a psychological evaluation will be requested, Paradis said.

The man is known to police in the Cote-des-Neiges borough.

Robert Viddier, the superintendent of the building, said the man has had other incidents in recent months.

“The guy is really sick,” Viddier said. “There have been several problems with him in the neighbourhood.”

According to police and the man’s neighbours, he tried a similar incident two weeks ago.

A large perimeter had been established by police during the incident, but streets in the area have reopened. However, Queen Mary Rd. is still blocked off between Clanranald Ave. and Dufferin St. in the westbound direction.
