Computer inside Toronto Star company edited Rob Ford’s Wikipedia entry

Bloggers are abuzz over who has been tinkering with Rob Ford’s Wikipedia page.

At issue are July 16 revisions that listed robfordmayor.com, a satirical website, as the Etobicoke councillor’s personal blog.

Ford lawyers had already sent a cease and desist letter to the creator of the site, and its domain provider, saying that the material constitutes a “very serious libel” and infringes on copyright. A letter posted on the defunct site describes it as an “obvious political spoof” and apologizes to Mr. Ford.

A Ford supporter reveals that the IP address that apparently made the change is linked to the Toronto Star organization.

Bob Hepburn, a spokesman for the Toronto Star, said the changes “did not come from the Toronto Star,” the newspaper.

“The Toronto Star owns a couple of these IP portals and they come under Toronto Star Newspapers Limited, which is a broader thing. The Toronto Star itself has a separate portal,” said Mr. Hepburn. A number of media properties fall under Toronto Star Newspapers Limited, including Eye Weekly, Sing Tao, Canadian Immigrant and Real Estate News.

“We’re trying to track it down to which computer it came from, which may be impossible to do,” said Mr. Hepburn.

He said it was important to clarify the source of the revisions because “there is false information out there that the Toronto Star is editing Rob Ford’s Wikipedia page and that is not true,” he said. “We’ve done an extensive investigation into this since it was brought to our attention.”
