Facebook makes mayor-mocking pages disappear

MONTREAL – The Facebook social networking website Thursday removed two fake pages lampooning Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay and Pointe Claire Mayor Bill McMurchie after a Gazette report on the two links.

The city of Montreal filed a complaint with Facebook in May to remove a false fan page for Tremblay, a spokesperson for the mayor said Wednesday. The page contained images and remarks that suggested Tremblay has ties to the Mafia.

McMurchie said he filed a complaint with Facebook several weeks ago, but had received no response, about a bogus profile created using his name and image. He said he also filed a complaint with Montreal police, contending the fake profile comes close to identity theft.

Kelly Ornelas, a spokesperson for Facebook in Canada, said the company does not comment on individual cases.

The two phony pages were gone from the social-networking website early yesterday morning, however.

Asked to comment on the false page at a news conference yesterday on a separate matter, Tremblay said he had never seen the fake site.

"If people use these sites to criticize people and to show lack of respect, then I think the best thing I can do is to totally ignore them," he said. "So that’s what I do."

McMurchie said he’s pleased Facebook removed the fallacious profile. Still, he said, the episode highlights the lack of verification on the site, which boasts 500 million users.

"That’s what I find quite amazing, that somebody … could put a picture of me and vital statistics and say what they want about me and I would never know the first thing about it," he said.

"It’s a terrible situation if there is no control on that type of thing."
