Toronto law office wins international design award

A Toronto law firm has won a design award for their art-bedecked, multi-hued office space, beating out other 250 entries from 15 countries.

Heenan Blaikie’s five-floor office, designed by Montreal outfit id+s Design Solutions, was announced Thursday as one of six winners of the Shaw Contract Group’s 2010 “Design Is…” international awards for innovative new spaces.

Each of the five floors uses a different thematic colour in unconventional ways. In the reception area, visitors who open the chartreuse coat closet are met with a painted backdrop of judges’ gowns and wigs. “We tried to make a space that was very approachable,” designer Susie Silveri said. “There’s whimsical aspects in the space that don’t make it so serious and so pretentious.”

Founding partner Roy Heenan’s art collection, including an A.Y. Jackson canvas and a Stan Douglas print, is featured throughout the space.

Another Canadian company, Cara Operations, won one of this year’s awards for their Vaughan headquarters, which were created by Thornhill, Ontario firm Westparks+Associates. Other recipients this year include a cancer clinic in Philadelphia and a public library in Phoenix.
