MONTREAL — Three Montreal Orthodox rabbis have signed a document calling for the acceptance of homosexual Jews into synagogues, according to media reports.

The document, called The Statement of Principles on the Place of Jews with a Homosexual orientation in our Community, has been signed by Orthodox rabbis and educators around the world.

It begins by saying, "all human beings are created in the image of God and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Embarrassing, harassing or demeaning someone with a homosexual orientation or same-sex attraction is a violation of Torah prohibitions that embody the deepest values of Judaism."

While the statement says that "Halakhic Judaism views all male and female same-sex sexual interactions as prohibited," it makes it clear that homosexual Jews should be welcomed as full members of the synagogue.

It was prepared after extensive debate between Orthodox rabbis, educators, mental health professionals and homosexual Jews.
