Green Party names ex-NHL tough guy as deputy leader

In Canada on July 31, 2010 at 17:42

The Greens are hoping a former NHL tough guy will help beef up the party’s presence in Quebec.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May named Georges Laraque a deputy leader of the Green Party of Canada today.

The 260-pound former Montreal Canadiens enforcer joined the Greens in February, but his role has been undefined until now.

The announcement is part of an attempt by the party to gain traction in the province.

Mr. Laraque will join Adriane Carr as a second deputy leader of the Greens.

He will replace Jacques Rivard, who jumped ship to the Bloc Québécois in June.
